Puppy Love | Winston Salem Children and Pet Photographer

This blog post is going to the dogs!  When this dog owner contacted me for a session for her tiny, little shih tzu , I thought,  “Sure, it will be a nice break from shooting babies and toddlers.”  Little did I know that shooting a tiny, little shih tzu is much the same as shooting a toddler.  You have to make them think they are doing what THEY want to do, when really they are doing what I want them to do. :)

Meet Shelby, the most adorable little dog ever:

Isn’t she the cutest thing?  She was such a good sport for the session, even though when she tired of me she gave me “the sigh” and turned her back to the camera.  As I said, just like a toddler.  I hear that Shelby loves Chick-fil-a chicken nuggets, so I hope she was rewarded with trip through the drive-thru on the way home from her session. :)

I am now going to interrupt this fun, lighthearted post for a quick lesson in copyright:

I’m sure you are aware, as a photographer, my livelihood depends on the producing beautiful images that I then sell to my clients.  When you buy prints of my images, you own that particular print.  You do not, however, own the rights to that image.  Therefore it is illegal (and just plain wrong) to scan that print for any purpose.  In addition to being illegal, it produces poor quality photos that are not a true representation of my work.  It is also illegal to right click and download my photos from the blog or other sources or to alter them without permission, such as creating your own black and white or attempting to remove my watermark.

If you do want to print your own images, I offer digital files for sale and would be happy to discuss those options with you.  I also offer web-sized watermarked files for sale that are perfect for sharing on facebook or emailing.

I feel certain that you would not steal a frame from Target to frame one of my shots, so I ask that you please do not steal my images as well by choosing not to scan or download them.  Okay, there, I’ll get off my soapbox now and back to this regularly scheduled blog post. :)

All the holiday cards and gifts that you are ordering are really putting me in the holiday spirit.  So I feel like it’s time for a little blog giveaway.  Leave a comment on this post and tell me what is a favorite tradition for your family at the holidays.  What is something you always look forward to doing every year?  Do you snuggle together and drink hot chocolate while watching The Grinch?  Do you go to a special Christmas Eve service?  Do you all tell what you are thankful for around the dinner table?  Whatever it is, leave a comment telling me one of your family’s holiday traditions and you will be entered in a drawing to win a $50 Uppercase Photography gift certificate.  It would make a great gift idea or you can keep it all for yourself!

December 20, 2009 - 1:40 pm Claire - So cute!!

December 2, 2009 - 11:51 am Candice - These are adorable!! I absolutely love the holiday season and I've already been listening to Christmas music! Since we have a new addition this year, I'd love to start a tradition specifically for Bryce. We always look forward to putting up our Christmas tree and spending lots of time with all of our family!!!

December 1, 2009 - 8:37 pm Jane Caine - I love the holidays because I'll be with my family, including my soon to be granddaughter. I love the newborn pictures.

December 1, 2009 - 5:47 pm Amy - How Cute.. That scarf shot.. Is Priceless.. I need you to do my Little guy.. I would have to BLOW that one UP~

November 30, 2009 - 10:22 pm John - Every year my wife and I look forward to our Christmas eve in the airport, it sounds terrible, however for us we are always traveling to see family and we are relieved that our work week over. We can finally relax with our Starbucks and take a break from all the pre Christmas hustle.

November 30, 2009 - 10:10 pm Courtney Davidson - your doggie photos are great! My husband and I look forward to putting up our 3 foot tall Christmas tree and looking at each ornament which has great meaning (places we have been or lived). We live in a tiny apt since we work for a travel company and our little tree always makes it cozy.

November 29, 2009 - 9:30 am Wende Trew - That is the cutiest dog!! Love them!!

November 28, 2009 - 10:43 pm Casey - My side of the family (the McGee side) always has fondue at an Aunt's house for Christmas Eve after going to our church service. We go home after we are all stuffed and open one gift which is always Christmas pajamas. I look forward to introducing Scott to fondue and seeing him in his Christmas pajamas this year.

November 25, 2009 - 12:03 pm nannie - Hey Julie, Love the shots of the dog. I think you should do Winston and Cole. You know our Christmas Eve tradition. It is always crazy at Nannie's house with all the presents and enough food for an army. The kids are so excited and when we get through with presents you cannot even see the floor. We have so much fun and I can't wait for this year.

November 25, 2009 - 12:40 am Amber Peters - When we lived in NC we would always have a Christmas Eve dinner that we called, "The dinner of the Misfits". It certainly wasn't misfits, but rather was our family and any other families that weren't going away or have any one to spend Christmas Eve with. We would all get together like family and the kids would have so much fun! I love Christmas and hearing about other peoples traditions1

November 24, 2009 - 10:41 pm Kirstin - Most importantly, we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus! The gift my son gets to open on each Christmas Eve is new pajamas that he wears that night. (Helps get him into bed too!) We also leave Santa and reindeer food. For breakfast, we eat Dad's bread and cinnamon rolls made from scratch! 1 more. At bedtime, we only turn on the Christmas lights/decorations, light candles and the fire and read The Night Before Christmas.

November 24, 2009 - 8:20 pm Christy - I look forward to driving to the mountains to cut down our Christmas tree. I can't wait to be outside while sipping hot chocolate. Then afterwards enjoying a big lunch at a family style restaurant.

November 24, 2009 - 4:34 pm Zoe Berkovic - These are just TOO cute! Love every single one!

November 24, 2009 - 3:38 pm Georgina - Julie, I keep looking at these and everytime I do they make me smile. Shelby certainly looks like she enjoyed herself and I think you did a fab job capturing her spirit.

November 24, 2009 - 3:37 pm Christina McCord - Growing up, my dad would always surprise us with a scavenger hunt as our last present. We would find an envelope somewhere in the tree and it was have a list of clues that would lead us to our final present. We would have to take turns and partake in each siblings "hunt!" It was great fun!!!!

November 24, 2009 - 3:01 pm Kelly Solomon - We started a new tradition this year, "Elf on a Shelf" and the boys are loving finding "snowy" every morning in a new spot. It has been a lot of fun.

November 24, 2009 - 2:44 pm Lina - oh Julie, you rocked that baby :) Amazing work.

November 24, 2009 - 2:09 pm Melissa - I love spending the night at my parents' home every Christmas Eve--even though we only live 15 minutes away. We put the presents out and fill stockings and all wake up to a breakfast of "Christmas sticky buns" Christmas morning.

November 24, 2009 - 12:59 pm Dawn - Julie, these are absolutely amazing. I love your creativity, even with a dog. I'm sure your client will be very happy!! BTW-my favorite Christmas tradition is going to Christmas service (usually Christmas Eve).

November 24, 2009 - 12:09 pm Nina - Julie, I always joke that you are the baby whisperer but who knew you were the dog whisperer too? We make Christmas cookies every year - the rolling out, baking and decorating usually takes 2 days but its so fun and yummy!

November 24, 2009 - 11:42 am Angela - We play a cute card game after Thanksgiving dinner. Hard to get into the details, but everyone wins little prizes (normally dollar store or other cheap treats). The kids love it and it has become a wonderful tradition.

November 24, 2009 - 11:30 am upper - Oh yay! I am LOVING reading about everyone's traditions. Keeping them coming!

November 24, 2009 - 11:25 am Sarah Klingman - My grandmother sends each grandchild a special angel ornament each year. I love decorating the tree with these beautiful ornaments. Now that I have a daughter I can't wait to start a collection for her.

November 24, 2009 - 11:09 am Natashi - We always get a Hallmark ornament that relates to whatever has happened during the year. On Christmas Eve, we watch "Emit Otter's Jugband Christmas". I make fudge and cookies as well!!!

November 24, 2009 - 10:56 am jill - When I was younger mom always bought a new ornament for me to put on the tree. Then when we were putting up the tree every year we would look through them to see how old they all were. So now I have started doing that will both of our children. But I still go to my moms house and look at the tree when she puts it up and find my old ornaments that are 20 years old and maybe a little older.

November 24, 2009 - 10:54 am Michelle Bennett - I look forward to making sausage balls with my Dad every year. We argue each year over grating the chees or using the cheese that's already grated....I say grate it yourself - it's WAY better! We also attend the Christmas Eve Lovefeast at our church - it's beautiful! Happy Holidays!

November 24, 2009 - 10:43 am Amy Jenkins - I love getting together with my family on Christmas Eve. I remember being so excited as a child and now it is fun to see our children with the same excitement!

November 24, 2009 - 10:37 am Lisa - Just like a toddler, Shelby was pooped after her afternoon of modeling. She slept in my lap all the way home and for the rest of the evening. And, yes, there were chicken nuggets. She woke up long enough for that anyway! We had a wonderful time and you are the most patient soul I know! I can't wait to see the rest of the photos. As far as favorite holiday traditions, ours have changed over the years but the one constant is spending Christmas Eve with my folks. I have never spent a Christmas away from my parents and for that I feel very blessed.

November 24, 2009 - 10:31 am Denise - Now that we have our own children, we have family to breakfast at our house. There are always pumpkin pancakes and my dad even helps cook! I love overhearing as the kids show all their loot to grandparents as we get breakfast served. Love the puppy pics! Bo and Luke await....;-)

November 24, 2009 - 10:29 am Melissa - Cute dog...if only my Sam would sit for pictures! In the Ukranian Catholic church we don't eat meat on Christmas Eve. So in our house we always had/have a big Christmas Eve Dinner with steamed shrimp, pierogies, fried potatoes, unleavened bread and kapusta. Then, after dinner we would open one gift before midnight mass.

November 24, 2009 - 10:26 am Susan OBrien - We go to the Hallmark store every year and each pick out our own oranment, going to Tanglewood and all getting together to watch Charlie Brown's Christmas. We did the Grinch last night!

November 24, 2009 - 10:21 am Shelby - "Shelby" (HEE HEE) is adorable.. I love the shot with the red scarf! As far as traditions.. ditto on what my sister, Jennie, said! She just made that really easy for me!!

November 24, 2009 - 10:20 am Jennifer - Every year starting as a child (then now the tradition continues with my husband Thomas and I) we listen to the SAME CD while we decorate the Christmas tree. You can NEVER start decorating until Percy Faith CD starts playing! haha. Julie, I love the dog pictures! I was asked many months ago if you did dogs...now I know the answer! My favorite dog shot is the one with the red scarf! What an AMAZING shot! Hope you & your family are doing good!

November 24, 2009 - 10:17 am Jennie - The pictures of the puppy are so cute! One of the traditions that I cherish growing up was on Christmas morning, my parents would always get up real early, be dressed, have breakfast going, Christmas music going and be on pins and needles to see our face when we see what Santa brought. The anticipation grew second by second as my siblings and I waited at the top of the stairs until everything was just so. Once we heard, "Ok, you can come down now", we three raced to the bottom of the stairs and into the room, where we came to a hault and stood in awe! Then we raced to our specific locations and started tearing through gifts. It is a tradition that I want to do with my kids and hope to experience the same thing that my parents did.

November 24, 2009 - 10:14 am Cara Everhart - On Christmas Eve we make food for Santa's reindeer! It consist of oatmeal and sparkles for the reindeer to be able to find it. My daughter's love to sprinkle it in the yard before bedtime. Santa gets cookies, so Rudolph needs a snack too!

Down on the Farm| Winston Salem Children’s Photographer

Well, maybe the post title should read UP on the farm, since these shots are not at the kind of farm you may be thinking of….they are from a Christmas tree farm!  Denise and I are good friends and she’s been wanting to do a session at her family friends’ Christmas tree farm for a while now.  This year the timing worked out and we headed up to the mountains for a session on the farm.

As I drove up to the farm, a barn down in a valley below the trees immediately caught my eye.  I wondered if we could actually get to the barn for some shots.  After taking my Honda Odyssey “off road” and a little hike through a field filled with Christmas tree stumps, we arrived at a beautiful old barn.  It was full of all kinds of interesting things and, as a photographer, I was in love!

herrinblog11

herrinblog2

Having two sisters myself and of course my own three girls, I loved capturing these two as sisters.  I have photographed them a lot, but I think this is the first time I have truly captured their relationship.

herrinblog3

herrinblog41

herrinblog5

And, of course, you can’t shoot at a Christmas tree farm without some shots with the trees.  They literally had to drag me away from the barn though. :)  Willow found herself the perfect tree:

herrinblog7

And what do you do when you find the perfect tree….well, you beg Daddy for THAT one, of course:

Then it was off into the setting sun:

You know you’re photographing friends when you are greeted at the end of your session with a local wine tasting and fresh baked pumpkin cake. Yum!

If you’re looking for a place to find YOUR perfect Christmas tree, go check out the Blue Ridge Gallery.  You will not only find Christmas trees,  but a gallery full of fine art, wine, quilts, ornaments, pottery, and so much more!  It’s also a very easy drive to get there, which is always a plus for the directionally challenged like me.

Hope this post helped put you in the holiday spirit!

Put A Smile On Your Face | Winston Salem Child Photographer

I knew coming back from the Hawaii trip would mean diving head first into the busiest time of the year.  The overwhelming amount of sessions and orders during the holiday season can be a bit stressful with lots and lots of late nights.  But really, who can stay stressed when staring at these beautiful, smiling faces on your computer screen?  I have seen some of the happiest, most well-behaved children EVER the past couple of weeks.  What a pleasure it has been to capture each of them!  Here are a few (okay, maybe more than a few) that I hope you enjoy:

Home Sweet Home | Winston Salem Newborn Photographer

Hawaii was amazing, but I am so happy to be home sweet home!  It was a wonderful week full of beautiful newborns in a beautiful place and I am so happy to have had such a unique experience.  But I really couldn’t wait to get back to my hubby and my sweet girls…9 days was a long time to be away from them.  The busy, holiday season is in full swing, so I haven’t had a lot of time to even peek at the images I took while in Hawaii.  But I had to polish up just a few to share with you….remember the focus of the trip was newborn photography:

I made it home in time for a rainy, but wonderful, Halloween with the girls.  We had a gypsy, a ballerina and a black cat:

Today, we are finally getting back into the school routine.  Please bear with me as I attempt to catch up on orders, emails, editing, etc. :)  A couple of announcments:

*If you have had a session this year and have already been presented with your proofs, you have until November 15th to place any orders that you would like back in time for Christmas.  This includes prints for gifts, custom items, holiday cards, etc.  There are no exceptions to this deadline (I love you all, but no exceptions even for you!) so please get those orders in if you would like them back in time for gift giving.

*If you have had or are scheduled for a recent session and are still waiting on your gallery, then of course the November 15th rule does not apply to you.  When you are given your gallery code, you will be given an order deadline as well.

*The 2010 calendar will be opened in December…I am excited for some wonderful changes and improvements coming to Uppercase Photography in 2010.  Stay tuned!

In Good Company | Winston Salem Children’s Photographer

As mentioned in my previous post, I spent last Friday shooting with some wonderful photographer friends in Raleigh.  There really is nothing like spending the day with a group of awesome ladies who share the same passion!  We had a blast and photographed some amazing models.  Thank you so much to those who came down to model for us.  Everyone was fabulous!  I have been busy with clients and haven’t had a chance to go through all my photos from that day, but I couldn’t resist grabbing a few to share.

We spent the morning on a farm with lots of babies and toddlers.

In the last post you met Kaitlyn, the beautiful bride whose wedding I photographed last weekend.  In this post you’ll get a chance to experience a taste of what I captured on Brian and Kaitlyn’s special day.

As with most weddings, it all started with a dress.

Here Comes The Bride | Winston Salem Photographer

I am asked all the time if I shoot weddings.  The answer is always “no.”  Always no, except for when Kaitlyn asked if I would photograph her wedding.  I have known Kaitlyn and her family since she was just a kid and my husband has known them even longer.  I even babysat her once when I was in high school. :)  I knew her special day would be filled with beauty (she is soon to be an event planner) and true emotion.  Before I knew it, I had agreed to photograph her large wedding on September 19, 2009!  The wedding day is behind us now and the happy couple is enjoying a Hawaiian honeymoon.  I am excited to share a sneak peek of the wedding day for them when they return.  But for now, I am equally excited to finally share a few of Kaitlyn’s bridal portraits taken back in June.  Isn’t she stunning?
