Grace | Winston Salem Photographer

So am I sitting here all snuggled up, children all tucked in bed, and waiting for the much anticipated snowstorm to arrive.  While waiting, I am working on some photos I took of my oldest daughter, Grace, over the weekend and thinking of how much she is growing up.  She turned eight on February 19th and we survived our first slumber party last weekend.  So this weekend I decided to take a few portraits to mark her eight year milestone.  As I sit here going through the photos I can just see these changes that will be coming soon.  She is in second grade right now, the very grade that was my favorite when I was teaching.  I tried third grade one year and it just wasn’t the same–the kids change so much that third grade year.  Since I can’t actually freeze time (and I’m sure I will truly enjoy watching her grow and change) what I CAN do is capture who she is right now.

So here is Grace…eight years old, loves a meal of ham with green beans and mashed potatoes, has changed her favorite color from pink to green, collects Littlest Pet Shop pets, hates talking on the phone but LOVES talking in person, is overly sensitive and cries easily (just like her mama), loves “soft” clothes, has read every Junie B. Jones book at least twice, tans to the most gorgeous brown in the summer, loves dance class, has a love/hate relationship with her little sisters, loves to draw and write, wants to be an artist or a teacher (or maybe an art teacher :) ) when she grows up, is 100% a daddy’s girl, has eyelashes to die for, plays a mean Eye of the Tiger on Guitar Hero, is right in the middle of the “awkward teeth” phase..

These are the things I’ll think of when I look back at these photos …and that is exactly the reason why I do what I do and why I feel so honored that you would choose ME to do that for YOU.

March 5, 2009 - 10:57 am Cara Everhart - I have a seven year old daughter, Jillian. I also have a one year old daughter, Allison, that Julie has photographed in the past. I look at the two of them together and try to remember all of the little things that Jillian did that Allison is now starting to do. I can't wait for Julie to work her magic with Jillian.

March 3, 2009 - 2:59 pm upper - Thanks for the sweet comments everyone...we think she's a "keeper" too. That is, unless school is not back in session tomorrow and then I'm considering renting her out for a small fee. :) ~Julie

March 2, 2009 - 1:35 am nannie - I can't believe how much you have grown Grace. You will always be Nannie's little girl and my first grand-daughter. Love you a bunch. You are a beautiful little girl and remind me so much of your mom at that age.

March 1, 2009 - 10:38 pm Sister - My beautiful niece!!! You are gorgeous!!!

March 1, 2009 - 9:13 pm Shelby - She really is... Precious! Beautiful Beautiful Photos!

Sweet Summertime | Winston Salem Photographer

I know, I know…it doesn’t quite feel like summertime just yet.  Grace and I went for a walk yesterday, and while we could see daffodils starting to poke out of the ground, there was certainly a winter chill still in the air!  However, it IS time to start thinking about summer photo sessions.  I am officially opening my calendar for June through September and booking summertime sessions.  I am also announcing my beach dates today in case anyone is interested in a beach session this year.

I will be at Oak Island, NC from July 12th through July 19th.  From August 1st through August 8th I will be in the Myrtle Beach, SC area.  And finally, from September 4th through the 7th I will be in the Topsail Beach, NC area.  If you are interested in a beach session please contact me and I will send you further information.

If you are interested in a local summertime session during June through September, I am booking those appointments now, so feel free to contact me as well.

To help celebrate the impending arrival of warm weather ( I hope!) I am having another blog contest as well.  Here’s how it works….we are going to see how many comments we can add to this blog post.  Everyone reading, please leave a comment and then pass this link (just forward the email you received announcing this post) and have friends, family, coworkers, random strangers, whomever you can convince to comment on this post as well.  If we can get at least 50 comments (only one per email address please) I will place everyone who commented in a drawing for a FREE summertime session.  If we can get at least 100 comments, I will draw for TWO free sessions!

***NEW UPDATE 2/24/09:  Myrtle Beach area sessions and Topsail area session are now full.  I still have session spots for the Oak Island trip.  You guys still have a long way to go in the comments, so email friends and family to help you out.  Even if you already have a session booked and you win, I’ll credit your session fee towards your purchase so it will still be free.  I will only conduct the drawing if we get to at least 50 comments, though. :)***

And just to get you in the mood, here are just a couple of my favorites from beach sessions in 2008:

I {heart} one week olds

What a great week this is turning out to be!  I had a session with a one week old girl on Monday and a one week old boy on Tuesday.  They were both just perfect, so I am excited to share some of their images with you.  I thought it was funny that both of these sessions began with the parents telling me that their baby didn’t like to be naked and they really didn’t know how we would get sleeping images of them without their clothes.  As you will see below…we managed.  Usually, it’s not the “being naked” that babies mind, it the being cold.  :)  Enjoy these warm and toasty, peacefully sleepy, perfectly curly, one-week-old cuties!

Now this last set of Ace is both for his family in Boston and my friend Lisa in Boston as well. :)  Lisa, who would’ve thought anyone but you would walk into my studio with so much Red Sox paraphernalia.  It brought back great memories of our tour of Fenway Park when we visited you in Boston!  Maybe little Ace will be playing there one day…

acepiperblog21

Enjoy your week everyone–we are gearing up for Grace’s 8th birthday tomorrow and her first sleepover party on Friday evening!

February 25, 2009 - 2:31 pm Jennifer Piper - I loved the session and the pictures that resulted! Ace seemed to enjoy himself and amazingly enough slept through most of it. The proofs are fantastic and I will definately sign up for the 3, 6, 9 and 12 month sessions to see our new addition grow over the next year. Thanks Julie!

Love Bug

Today Amelia came to celebrate her first birthday with me.  Tomorrow she will be celebrating with her family and friends at a “Love Bug” theme ladybug party.  I had not seen her since she was six months old and she was so much fun!!  She was saying words, taking steps, and doing that adorable “scrunchy nose” face that all my first birthday babies like to do.

In the first photo below, Amelia had just discovered the suitcase we sat her own was the perfect height for her to stand up and take a few steps.  Look at the grin on her face–she was proud of herself!

ameliablog1

Gotta have a few black and whites:

ameliablog2

As an appetizer to her first birthday cake, she enjoyed a whirly pop. :)

ameliablog3

Then it was time for cake.  Her mom brought a ladybug cake, hat, tutu, and matching balloons!  Amelia really enjoyed her cake and I had so much fun watching her dive in–I love it when they aren’t afraid of the whole idea!

ameliablog4

Amelia, I hope you have a wonderful Love Bug party tomorrow and I hope you enjoy the cake just as much as you did today!

Availability Update

I have ONE weekend session open between now and the end of May–that date is Sunday, May 24th.  I will open up the summer calendar soon and there will be weekend spaces available for June and beyond.  I DO have plenty of weekday spots available in March, April and May!! Remember, the time will change soon and it will be staying light much later, which is very helpful for shooting outside during the week.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone–make sure to give hugs and kisses to all your own little “Love Bugs.”

Know Anyone?

I am itching to shoot a set of newborn twins…so does anyone know anyone who JUST had twins or is expecting in the near future?  If so, please have them email or call me.  I am willing to shoot a complimentary session for a set of newborn twins less than 14 days old if the session is booked before March 13th.

And because a post isn’t a post without pictures, here are two of my monkeys enjoying the warm weather.  Grace, the oldest, couldn’t be bothered with me while I was trying out a new lens that I just purchased.  She had much more important items on her agenda. :)  So here are Claire and Stella, who were just happy to be outside:

Be warned…You are about to see one of the CUTEST three months olds ever as you scroll down.  I had the pleasure of photographing Kendall when she was brand new and this weekend she returned for her three month session.    She was a darling newborn and I knew she would grow into an adorable baby, but I still couldn’t get over just how CUTE she was.

Meet Kendall–The first photo below is from her newborn session and then beside it is one from this weekend’s session in the same basket.

I love incorporating something personal to the child during sessions, so I was really excited when Kendall’s mom brought this round rug from her nursery to the session.  Wouldn’t this series look adorable hanging in her room?!

Between sweet little Kendall and wonderful weather, it was great weekend!  I hope it was for all of you as well.  The temporary break in the cold weather has me thinking about spring and Spring Break.  Tory and I would like to take the girls on a mini vacation, as our schedules will not allow us to be out of town for the entire week of Spring Break.  I was hoping all of you could help me out with suggestions on where to go.  We are planning to take all three girls, who will be 1.5 yrs, 4 yrs, and 8 yrs at that time–so kid friendly is a MUST!  We would like to drive there and stay 3 or 4 nights the first weekend in April.  Any suggestions?  We usually head down to Wilmington for short trips like this, but I’m thinking I might like to try something different.  Tory wants to go camping, but I’m not really a camping fan :), so I need you all to help me out with other suggestions (preferably ones that don’t involve sleeping in a tent)!

February 16, 2009 - 1:38 pm upper - Hi Natashi. We checked out the Great Wolf Lodge and thought it looked fabulous! However, we decided against going because there is one opening in Charlotte/Concord the week after spring break. So we are going to visit the local one next year and avoid the big drive. :) We are still trying to decide what to do instead, so any ideas are still welcome!

February 16, 2009 - 1:22 pm Natashi - Hi Julie, I am curious. Did your family decide on a Spring break trip? Did you get some other ideas besides Great Wolf?

February 10, 2009 - 5:58 pm Lisa Cohen - Hello Julie, the best photographer in the world-I can say I knew you when...you bought your first camera, took pictures of our babies, and were gathering your first clients. I am writing to also sugggest Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg-we have been checking it out to visit in late june with Kathryn for SC. Good luck on your search. Think of you and the girls often. Miss you. your friend in boston. ps you can always come back up here and visit!!!!

February 10, 2009 - 12:11 pm Susan Reed - Hi Julie. I don't have anything to offer for a mini vacation, but wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our session on Sat. You captured Kendall in all her glory even when she didn't want to cooperate. You are wonderful!!!

February 9, 2009 - 7:48 pm upper - It sounds great guys--now for the dealbreaker--how long is the drive? :) Any other suggestions still welcome as well! Julie

February 9, 2009 - 7:18 pm Ginny - Julie ~ I was going to suggest the same! We went to the Great Wolf Lodge last year and had a super time! The good thing is you can come and go ~ there is all the historic stuff plus some terrific outlets so you can play, walk, eat, shop!

February 9, 2009 - 2:05 pm upper - Hi Natashi! So great to hear from you! Someone else just suggested this same place to me via email. I am definitely going to check it out. Thanks! Julie

February 9, 2009 - 2:02 pm Natashi - Hi Julie!!! Why don't you try the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg? It's a large indoor waterpark resort. It kinda has the camping theme in the rooms, depending on what you choose and it's kid friendly as well. Check out their website for more info.

Three Month Olds

I’ll be honest, I used to dread my baby planners three month old session just a little bit.  Not that I don’t LOVE three month olds–they are adorable.  It’s just that I wasn’t really sure what to DO with them.  They aren’t curly and sleepy like  newborn and they can’t sit up like a six month old, so the posing options are a bit more limited.  I no longer dread the three month old sessions and I think the turning point for me was when I let go of what they couldn’t do and embraced what they could do.  Three month olds can usually smile and although they prefer to smile at faces rather than big, black cameras, we do usually get a few smiles captured at the three month session.  Every once in a while, a three month old will fall asleep during a session and let me get a few sleeping baby photos.  These two shots of Bodhi, a recent three month old, demonstrating the sleeping shot and the smiling shot–both taken within a few seconds of each other!  It’s amazing what a little “power nap” can do. :)

bodhipeoplesthreemonths2blog

bodhipeoplesthreemonths3blog

Did you notice Bodhi’s little dimpled chin–I love it–like a little John Travolta!  So cute!

If I can convince parents to wait until a week or two after the three month “birthday” then the baby usually has pretty good head control and I can get shots like this.  Embry is actually closer to four months in these photos, but look at her hold that head up!

embreykeegerthreemonths27blog

embreykeegerthreemonths2blog

The three month session is also a good time to get a few mom/baby shots or dad/baby shots.

blog3

I have also discovered that three months is a great time to do my popular “baby bits” collage photos.  They are usually all filled out with chubby rolls but not going anywhere yet…a great time to capture all those beautiful little baby parts.  This recent three month old, Saige, had some adorable baby rolls!

saigebabybitsblog1

Yay for three month old babies!  I have another one coming on Saturday and I can’t wait to see her again.

Thanks to everyone who visited the UpperCase Facebook page.  If you haven’t seen it, be sure to check it out here.

Now for the winner of the DVD slideshow…a random drawing declares Kari Allison as the winner.  Congratulations Kari!  If you decide to book a 2009 session you will receive a DVD slideshow of all your proof images set to music.

Keep those comments coming–I love hearing from all of you!  I’ll post another blog contest for everyone soon.

Facebook

UpperCase Photography now has a business page on Facebook.  Check it out here:  UpperCase on Facebook

I enjoy Facebook for keeping up with friends, new and old, and now I can use it to keep up with clients as well!

Be sure to become a fan of UpperCase Photography so you can be updated on news and happenings.  If you want to leave a note on the wall or write a review of UpperCase photography, that would be wonderful as well.

Please do not download photos from the Facebook page (its illegal!) but feel free to tag you or your children if you see them on the page.

I am still working on the page and learning all the cool things I can do, so if you have suggestions for the page let me know.

I am working on a new blog post and the winner for the contest will be announced….so stay tuned and check out the Facebook page while you wait. :)

February 4, 2009 - 6:51 pm upper - Michelle, you are so sweet! I hope to see you on Facebook very soon...and I hope to see that beautiful girl of yours soon as well. :)

February 4, 2009 - 6:25 pm Michelle Bennett - well, I have been supremely opposed to getting a Facebook account... but I see if I am going to be up with the times I'm going to have to set it up1 Julie, everything you do is magnificent and we can't wait for our next photo session with you!

Little Model~Madison

Madison came for her nine month session this week.  Lucky for me she wasn’t quite crawling yet, although I warned her mom that she better break out the baby gates because Madison was sooooo close to taking off!  She was a fabulous little model for me.  I wish I could share them all here on the blog but I’ll narrow it down to these.

I always look forward to Madison’s sessions, not only because she is such an adorable little baby, but because her mom and I really “click.”  I enjoy chatting with her about our shared love of shopping for girls clothing!  At this session we were chatting about ways to make sessions go more smoothly, especially for babies.  She encouraged me to post some of my suggestions for all of you, so here goes…

1.  Consider clothing~I have mentioned before how important the right clothing choices are for a session.  This does NOT mean you have to go out and buy something very expensive for your child to wear.  Just make sure they are wearing something that fits them well and doesn’t have a tiny, busy print.  Bold patterns and textures like sweaters work well for photos as do simple and classic solids.  Try to pick something that both you and your child likes and something that represents “them” at this point in their childhood.  Babies under the age of one look great in “nakey baby” shots.  When else in your life are chubby rolls so cute!

2.  Session Day~On the date of the session try to keep your child’s schedule as normal as possible.  This is NOT the time to tinker with your child’s nap schedule!  This is also not the time to head out for a full day of activities before the session.  Try to keep things as relaxed and low key as possible.  Also, if you are nervous or stressed about the session–don’t be!  We all know how babies can pick up on our feelings of stress or anxiety.  So try to talk about how much fun we will have and how much you are looking forward to the photos.  And be prepared because we really WILL have fun!

3.  During the Session~Parents are often unsure of what to DO while I am photographing their child.  I prefer photos of children looking directly into the camera.  I feel it makes a more moving and emotional photo.  Therefore, your child needs to be interacting with me and my camera as much as possible during the session.  It is helpful if my voice is the only one they hear during the actual shooting so that they will look at me as much as possible.  I will sing songs, play peekabo, make my infamous monkey noise–you know, make a general fool of myself. :)  Now if none of that seems to be working and your child won’t make eye contact with me or becomes anxious, I will most certainly ask you to step in and help and I’ll be forever grateful for it!

4.  Safety First~If we decide to prop your baby in a basket, chair, stool, etc please stay within an arms reach.  And don’t be afraid to grab for them if they start to topple!  I’d rather redo a shot than end up with an injured or upset baby.

5.  Speak Up, But Keep An Open Mind~These two things sound contradictory and in a way I guess they are.  I don’t mind at all if you have seen a certain shot or pose and you’d like something similar.  Let me know and I’d be happy to give it a shot!  But also keep in mind that every child and every session is different, so it is best to keep an open mind.  I always say that I am grateful for whatever my subject will bless me with during a session.  You may or may not end up with “the shot” that we had in mind, but rather something more wonderful than we could have ever even anticipated!

Okay, that’s probably enough unsolicited advice for now.  If any of you have any further suggestions feel free to let me know.

I mentioned last time if was time for another contest, so here we go!  Anyone who leaves a comment on this post will be entered in a drawing for a free DVD slideshow (all images from a session set to music; these are NOT printable files) with their next session.  How cool is it to pop a DVD in and watch your images on TV!

Have a great weekend everyone and remember to leave a comment below–it’s free and easy!

I totally look forward to a photographer who would rather work with my child, than one who expects me to do everything! Love your blog & love looking at the beautiful photos!! Lori Hoffman

Six Months Old~Prime Portrait Time

There is that magical time in a baby’s first year, when they can sit up but can’t crawl, that is the perfect time for portraits.  This time is usually around 6 months of age and I was lucky enough to capture two six month old boys this week.  These two handsome boys did not disappoint–they were full of smiles and personality!  I could have photographed both of them all day.

Meet Parker.  I last saw him when he was a newborn and he has grown into such a cute and happy baby!

Notice all of Parker’s big smiles were when he was naked–he loved it!

Now meet Caleb.  You may have seen Caleb before as a newborn and at three months old.  He is now six months old and grows more handsome each time I see him!  Doesn’t he have the best head full of dark hair?

This week will be filled with more babies under age one on the baby plan–I love them!

***A few unrelated tidbits***

I am still looking for Class of 2010 students who are interested in receiving free pictures!  Please email me for more details.

Also, there is a contemporary Christian band who is comprised of members from our church called P4:13.  They play at our services often and I really enjoy them.  P4:13 will be playing at Foothillls Juice and Java in King on Saturday February 7th at 7:30pm.  If you have a chance to check them out, I’m sure you will enjoy them!

Summer beach trips are almost finalized, so be looking for information on the blog soon.  I will be taking a very limited number of beach sessions while I am traveling.

It will be time for a new contest on the blog soon, so be on the lookout for a chance to win!

Have a great week everyone!
